Background

I have started this blog in an attempt to understand the current and recent history of health care among the Mayans in Guatemala. I encourage posts so that we can learn together how to help these wonderful people achieve their potential. These indigenous groups have suffered from a condition known as "medical pluralism": that is, Western medicine has been competing with the traditional healing medicines and herbs instead of trying to understand and adapt to the Maya culture. It is my hope that we can understand more clearly what has happened/is happening so we can resolve conflicts and empower the Maya communities to be able to take care of the problems and issues they face.

My quest to find Guatemalan historical information

For my Excel assignment, I really struggled to find great measurable statistics for infant mortality or other health related information in censuses and in other primary records. Eventually I found a great study comparing infant mortality rates from the 1940s and the 1980s. Guatemala's rate was also listed in comparison to a handful of other nations. The link is http://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.1086/529000. Click the pdf version at the top, and scroll down to page 55. Only one person can view this article at a time. I hope you find this interesting.
